For more than 20 years, the month of November has been a symbol of raising awareness of male health. The Czech Republic joined the international Movember movement four years after it was founded. Ever since, the Men Against Cancer endowment fund has run an annual campaign to draw attention to serious diseases to which men are exposed. In the Czech Republic, the most frequent oncological disease among men is prostate cancer: every year, eight thousand people are newly diagnosed.
The campaign seeks to appeal to men to overcome their timidity and undergo a preventive screening which may well save their lives. Men above 50 years of age are asked to go for a preventive examination of their prostate, while younger men hear the clarion call to participate in preventative measures against testicle cancer. In short, "Movember" isn’t simply about growing a moustache, but first and foremost about how to improve self-care for one’s health.
What does the typical preventive screening look like? It includes a conversation with a urologist, a physical exam of abdomen and prostate, an ultrasound screening of prostate and testicles, and the drawing of a blood sample to establish the presence of what is known as the prostate-specific antigen (PSA). An elevated level of this antigen indicates an oncological issue of the prostate.
At our clinic, urological screenings are performed by a top-notch specialist in the field, Markéta Matějková, MD, FEBU, who among other things was the first Czech to receive a console surgeon certificate for the Da Vinci system for robot-assisted surgery, used typically for performing surgery on the prostate, kidneys, or urinary bladder.
