How is the examination performed?

As in other medical specialties, so in cardiology, the examination will begin with a thorough conversation between the physician and the patient about the latter’s complaints. The cardiologist will examine the patient visually, by palpation, and by auscultation (i.e., using a stethoscope to listen to sounds inside the chest), and measure the patient’s blood pressure. The specialist will then consider and determine the further course of action, whereas our practice avails of a broad range of screening methods. To mention but the most fundamental ones:

Electrocardiography, or ECG for short
Holter monitoring (24-hour monitoring of blood pressure or ECG)
Echocardiography: examining the heart through ultrasound

Cardiac stress test

A cardiac stress test is a non-invasive physical examination to monitor the work of the heart under stress. During this stress test, the patient rides a cycle ergometer (exercise bike), gradually increasing the load after two minutes. During the examination, the doctor observes the patient’s ECG curve, which shows changes related to, for example, blood flow to the heart muscle or various possible arrhythmias. The heart rate and blood pressure are also monitored to see if they correspond to the stress.
