Abdominal Aortic Aneurysm Screening: When No Symptoms Doesn’t Mean No Risk 04.23.2026

Many men and women in active life feel that if they feel well, there is no need to address their health. They stay active, spend time with family, and often postpone preventive check-ups. However, some conditions develop silently, without warning signs. One of them is an abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA) — often referred to as a “silent killer” due to its potentially fatal consequences if left undetected.

What Is an Abdominal Aortic Aneurysm and Why Is It Dangerous?

The abdominal aorta is the main artery that supplies blood to the abdomen and lower limbs. If the wall of the artery weakens, it can gradually expand under pressure, forming an aneurysm.

The greatest risk lies in the fact that aneurysms often develop without any symptoms. In many cases, they are only discovered after a rupture occurs — a life-threatening emergency with a very high mortality rate. This is why early detection through ultrasound screening is critically important.

“In vascular diseases, the absence of symptoms does not mean the absence of risk. The purpose of screening is to detect a problem before the patient is aware of it and prevent a potentially fatal rupture”, explains MUDr. Iva Krulová, radiologist at MY CLINIC.

National Screening Program: Limited Access

Since January 1, 2025, a pilot AAA screening program has been introduced in the Czech Republic. However, it is highly restrictive:

  • Men only – women are excluded, despite also being at risk
  • Narrow age range – limited to men aged 65–67
  • GP referral required – screening is not available without a doctor’s request

In reality, abdominal aortic aneurysms do not follow insurance criteria. They can affect younger men, older patients, and women as well.

If you do not meet these strict criteria, preventive screening is not available through the standard system.

At MY CLINIC, we offer abdominal aortic aneurysm screening beyond the national program, including patients who do not meet these limitations.

The MY CLINIC Advantage: Accessible Screening Without Barriers

At MY CLINIC, we go beyond restrictive national programs. We believe that everyone should have access to information about their health.

Why choose screening at MY CLINIC?

  • No age or gender restrictions - Screening is available for both men and women of all ages.
  • No referral required - You can book directly, without a GP recommendation.
  • Fast and non-invasive - The ultrasound examination is painless, safe, and takes approximately 10 minutes.
  • Immediate results - You receive your results immediately, and if needed, we arrange further specialist care without delay.

Note: Screening at MY CLINIC is a self-paid preventive service, even if you have a referral.

How the Examination Works

From the patient’s perspective, the procedure is simple and comfortable.

The ultrasound is performed while lying down, using a probe placed on the abdomen. The examination is:

  • completely safe
  • radiation-free
  • quick and non-invasive

You receive the results immediately after the examination.

“The greatest value of preventive screening is the peace of mind it brings. In the case of abdominal aortic aneurysm, a short ultrasound can save a life at a stage when safe and planned treatment is still possible”, adds MUDr. Iva Krulová.

When Should You Consider Screening?

The right time is now.

If you belong to a higher-risk group — such as smokers, people with high blood pressure, or those with a family history of vascular disease — or simply want reassurance about your health, do not postpone screening.

Do you want to be sure your blood vessels are healthy? Book your preventive abdominal aorta ultrasound screening at MY CLINIC.

We are here for you — whether or not you meet the criteria of national screening programs.
