Global Contributions of Czech Women in Science 02.28.2023

On 21 February 2023, at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, a discussion was held on the topic of the Global Contributions of Czech Women in Science. Successful women scientists met there to share their experiences with the scientific activities of women in the Czech Republic and abroad with Czech diplomats, students, and other guests.

The panel discussion was kicked off by Minister of Foreign Affairs Martin Dvořák.
During the moderated debate and the lively discussion that followed, the panelists shared their experiences with the status and activities of women in science in the Czech Republic and abroad with Czech diplomats from both the home front and embassies and consulates throughout the world. The main topics were questions of women succeeding in formerly traditional male fields, equality and compensation of women in science, women in senior scientific positions, and combining personal and work life.

The following women scientists participated in the debate:

Dr. Barbora East, Ph.D. is a medical scientist from the 3rd Surgery Clinic of the 1st Faculty of Medicine of Charles University and Motol University Hospital specializing in abdominal wall reconstruction. She serves as the quality secretary for the European Hernia Society and is one of the co-founders of the Women in Surgery section of the Czech Surgical Society.

Doc. RNDr. Kateřina Komrsková, Ph.D., is the head of the Reproductive Biology Laboratory at the Biotechnology Institute of the Czech Academy of Sciences, BIOCEV. She has spent many years studying the functions of selected gamete proteins and reproductive organs during the fertilization process.

Kateřina Sam, Ph.D., is the head of the multitrophic interaction laboratory at the Entomology Institute of the Biology Centre of the Czech Academy of Sciences in České Budějovice. In 2018 she received the prestigious ERC Starting Grant in 2018, and in her research she focuses on topics in the areas of zoology, ecology, and behavioural ecology.
