For more than 20 years, the month of November has stood for raising awareness in the area of men’s health. The Movember initiative was founded in Australia, and its name is a combination of "moustache" and "November" which at the same time plays a pun on the term "movement". In 2003, a Movember foundation was created, and four years later, the Czech Republic joined the effort. Ever since, the Men Against Cancer endowment fund has been running an annual campaign to point out serious diseases afflicting in men. In the Czech Republic, the most common oncological disease in men is prostate carcinoma, with eight thousand newly diagnosed individuals every year.
The campaign’s stated goal is to appeal to men to overcome any feelings of shame and submit to preventative examinations which can save their lives. Men above the age of 50 are compelled to make an appointment for preventative prostate exams, and younger men to take steps to prevent testicular cancer. In short, Movember is not only about "the moustaches", but first and foremost about better self-care through healthcare.
What’s a typical preventative exam like? It involves an interview with the urologist, a physical examination of abdomen and prostate, an ultrasound of prostate and testicles, and a blood sample to test for the PSA antigen. An elevated level of this antigen indicates an oncological disease of the prostate. You may arrange for your preventative exam at MY CLINIC without prior referral – simply call our client help-line at 222 900 900.
