FAQs about Tuberculosis (TB) Testing

HOW IS TUBERCULOSIS TESTING CARRIED OUT?

The basic examination is a chest X-ray, which is performed for all applicants over the age of 15.

If the X-ray shows changes that may be related to tuberculosis, three sputum samples must be collected. The samples are taken at MY CLINIC over three consecutive mornings. The first sample is tested by PCR, all three samples are examined microscopically, and they are also cultured. The cultures are evaluated after 3, 6, and 9 weeks. Final results are therefore available after nine weeks.

If a positive result is detected at any stage, we will inform the client immediately by phone.

CAN I BE TESTED ELSEWHERE, CLOSER TO MY HOME?

No. The samples must be collected directly at MY CLINIC under the supervision of a trained nurse, and then sent immediately to a laboratory approved by the U.S. Embassy.

WILL I NEED TO PAY EXTRA?

No. Tuberculosis testing is fully covered by MY CLINIC.

CAN I BRING AN X-RAY TAKEN AT ANOTHER CLINIC?

No. For visa purposes, chest X-rays must be performed exclusively at our contracted facility.

CAN A BLOOD TEST REPLACE SPUTUM TESTING?

No. The testing process is strictly defined by the CDC and requires sputum collection for diagnosis.

HOW LONG IS MY MEDICAL EXAMINATION VALID IF I HAVE TO WAIT FOR THE TEST RESULTS?

If the sputum test results are negative, the medical examination is valid for 3 months, counted from the completion of the testing.

I HAD TUBERCULOSIS IN THE PAST AND WAS SUCCESSFULLY TREATED. DO I STILL NEED TO BE TESTED?

Yes. A previous tuberculosis infection does not protect against reinfection, and post-tuberculosis changes on the X-ray cannot be distinguished from those of an active disease.
