From Orthopaedics to the Olympics with MUDr. Robert Frei 09.14.2021

One of MY CLINIC’s many top specialists is Dr. Robert Frei who heads the Orthopaedic Department. With nearly 20 years of professional life dedicated to orthopaedics, Dr. Frei also has extensive experience with sports medicine. Since 2013, he has served as Chief Orthopaedist at Pavel Kolář’s Centre of Physical Medicine and attended Olympic Games as a physician on several occasions. We spoke with Dr. Frei shortly after his recent return from the Tokyo Olympic Games. The article below contains interesting tidbits from the interview. You can listen to the podcast containing the full interview in Czech language.

Orthopaedics – Treatment for Musculoskeletal Ailments

Orthopaedics is a branch of medicine that encompasses many areas. It provides adults and children with treatment for disorders of the musculoskeletal apparatus, the interrelated system of bones, joints, muscles, and tendons that gives humans the ability to move. Ailments orthopaedists treat most often involve joints, which is due to the stress to which they are exposed during routine movements or sports activities. Sport-related problems are a frequent cause of visits to an orthopaedist, whether due to an injury or long-term stress.

Fractured bones are among the most common ailments. There are many types of fractures, each requiring a different approach to treatment. For example, preventing infection is an important consideration in treating open fractures. Likewise, a specific treatment is required for displaced fractures, where the injured bones are moved from their proper location. Generally speaking, however, the basic treatment for fractures involves the application of a suitable stabilization device. Depending on the nature of an injury, devices used to stabilize broken bones include orthotics and casts. Internal fixation is required in some cases, which necessitates a surgical procedure. Stabilization inhibits movement, which is required for broken bones to heal properly. Another important factor is metabolic support for the healing process, such as calcium and Vitamin D supplements, or magnetic therapy.

One of the most progressive methods used in orthopaedics is treatment involving the administration of plasma rich in growth factors. Plasma containing growth factors is extracted from blood taken from the patient, and subsequently injected into the site of the injury. The growth factors have a highly favourable effect on the healing process. This method is very successful in treating the golfer's elbow or the tennis elbow, both a painful injury of tendons and ligaments in the elbow joint. Orthopaedic Care at MY CLINIC

Apart from high expertise and the use of state-of-the-art therapeutic methods, orthopaedic care at MY CLINIC includes personalized approach to each individual patient. Ample time is allotted to both the examination and to responding to the patient’s questions. Likewise, MY CLINIC specialists are available for a consultation to provide a second opinion regarding ailments treated elsewhere.

The high level of services is supported by top quality equipment and instruments. Significant time savings can be achieved by the option to carry out an ultrasound examination on premises. Ultrasound plays a very important role in orthopaedic examinations because it displays the condition of tissues in movement, during muscle contraction.

Collaboration with other specialists is a major factor for orthopaedic treatment to be successful. Orthopaedics are very closely tied to rehabilitation as well as to neurology and other specialists. One of MY CLINIC's benefits is the fact that all medical specializations are conveniently available on premises. Our holistic approach to treatment, which relies on collaboration between specializations, contributes significantly to diagnosing problems correctly.

Orthopaedic Prevention

Regrettably, patients often visit an orthopaedist only when they are experiencing considerable pain. That is unfortunate because many injuries and disorders are preventable. Dr. Frei comments: “First and foremost, everyone must realize what stress they put on the musculoskeletal system, what they expect from it, and, conversely, what they provide it with.” Musculoskeletal disorders are often the results of sports activities, the quality of training regimens, and subsequent relaxation and regeneration.

In addition, a timely visit to an orthopaedist can detect congenital joint dislocations, which place substantial burden on the locomotor apparatus over the long term. Stress caused by such factors can in many cases be reduced by the use of orthopaedic aids or kinesio taping. Consulting an orthopaedist regarding possible modifications of body movement patterns is always beneficial.

Medical Care in the Olympic Village

Dr. Frei's attendance at the Tokyo Olympic Games has allowed us to take a peek behind the scenes of this top-level sports event. As he testifies, this year’s Olympics were different in many regards. The amenities and facilities for athletes were excellent, but overall, the atmosphere was gravely affected by the absence of spectators as a result of measures taken against the COVID-19 pandemic.

Dr. Frei was a member of the medical team accompanying Czech athletes. His role was to serve as a specialist in a medical centre set up in the Olympic Village. An example of a treatment administered by Dr. Frei was a hip joint injury of a female athlete, which required a magnetic resonance scan and a subsequent manual intervention. Another injury, albeit unrelated to sports, was a scooter accident sustained by an athlete inside the Olympic Village, which resulted in a chin laceration that required outpatient treatment.
